Whether you have a kitten who needs to be house trained, or an unruly full-grown cat who REALLY needs to be house trained, you can solve this pesky problem with the proper training. When you first decide to teach your cat to use a litter box, it can seem like a real mystery. You go down to your local discount store, pick up a giant bag of kitty litter (go for the clumping variety!), and wait. You can’t just instruct your cat as to what he is supposed to do with the litter, so how do you communicate your desires?
Fortunately, house training your cat doesn’t have to be an exercise in frustration. If you’ve ever watched your cat give himself a bath, you know that cats are clean animals. Given their preference, they actually like to cover up their waste with dirt or a similar substance. So you have an advantage from the beginning; that is that your cat wants to have a clean place to do his business.
Now believe it or not, cats are like you and I in a rather peculiar way. They like to do their business in private! So you will need to find a home for the litter box that is both easy for the cat to get to, and private enough to encourage him to actually use it.
So now you have everything set up properly, how do you actually teach your cat to use the litter box? The first step is to just place your cat in the box to allow him to get comfortable with it. Amazingly enough, that highly intelligent creature known as your cat will instinctively know what to do with the litter box!
It really is that simple. However, don’t assume that your work is done. In order to encourage your cat to continue using the litter box, you must make absolutely sure that you keep it very clean. Basically this means that you will need to scoop out all your cat’s waste every day. Remember that clumping litter we talked about earlier? That handy invention will make this task incredibly easy for you to accomplish.
On occasion, you may find that your cat is more difficult to house train, or refuses to use his litter box for some reason. Cutting Edge Cat Care will cover some reasons for this in another article.
